ALMORAVIDS
The Almoravids were Muslims the practically operated influentially during the 11 century. Their socio-political activities led to the establishment of a great Empire called Almoravid Empire.
They Empire was situated between the area know today as North Africa and the West Africa. They were led by Ibn Yasin who started teaching a very strict form of Islam from the Senegal area. His followers were called al-murabitum (people of the ribat). They started a jihad in 1042 in order to establish their influence. Their jihad saw them conquer many people of Western Sahara and western Sudan (some parts of West Africa). Those they conquered were converted to Islam. Their war success saw them conquer important trading town like Awdaghost and Morocco. In 1057 Ibn Yasin was killed.
Almoravid Empire continued under a new leader called Abu Bakr. Abu Bakr continued the conquering spree of Ibn Yasin by taken over Koumbi Saleh that was the capital of old Ghana in about 1976. The northern region, the Almoravids led by Yusuf Ibn Tachfin extended their empire all over the Maghreb and part of Spain. By 1106 Yusuf died and the empire stated declining both in the Magreb and Sudan region. In Morocco the Almoravids were replaced by the Almohads, another Berber Muslim group. In the Sudan region, they were not able to control the people they earlier conquered.
